How to travel Laos by flight

Elephant village in Laos
Since many destinations in Laos are not easily reached by plane, land travel is often preferred to air travel when traveling between cities in Laos. It is slower but this lets you appreciate the gorgeous scenic beauty of Laos – that is part of the excitement of traveling through this lovely country. Travel Indochina Laos

Fly to Savannakhet

Transport between the city center and Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport (airport code VTE), which is 3.5km west of the city is by a pre-paid coupon and fixed at $6/54,000 kip. Travelling from the city to the airport you have more power to bargain with the tuk tuk drivers and, you can bargain it down a bit even though they will initially quote a similar price. Currently serving Wattay International Airport are five mainline carriers, including THAI, China Eastern, AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines and of course, the national carrier Lao Airlines. The ticket price now includes departure tax, which is 5,000 kip for domestic flights and $10 for international flights. Domestic destinations include Luang Nam Tha, Sayabouri, Pakse, Huay Xai, Luang Prabang and Udomxai. Also, there are flights to Xieng Khouang, Pakse and Luang Prabang every day, and flights to the rest three or four times per week. If there are not enough passengers, these flights are occasionally cancelled. Tours on Indochina

Fly to Pakse

Aircraft and Pakse Airport

There are at least three daily flights between Luang Prabang and Vientiane plus flights to Phonsavan and Pakse operated by Lao Airlines. It is highly recommended to confirm your flight a few days before departure. Credit cards are accepted by Lao Airlines in Luang Prabang and it is possible to book flights on THAI (only between Thailand and Laos). You can also have most travel agents help you book your domestic as well as international flights. Remember that at the airport, you will have to pay US$1/10 for domestic/international flights. This is an airport tax that your ticket includes. As the plane descends over the mountains in preparation for landing the view of the town is excellent, try to get a window seat when flying into Luang Prabang. You can find Lao Airlines (212173) and Bangkok Air (253 253) offices, post office, exchange booth, a branch of Lao Development Bank, a restaurant, phone-card telephone and an air-conditioned departure lounge inside the Luang Prabang International Airport (212173), which is 4km from the city center.
